TPC Danzante Bay’s Dazzling 18 – An Alternative to Cabo San Lucas Golf
Discover Mexico’s Only TPC Golf Course Not far from Cabo San Lucas golf courses, TPC Danzante Bay in Loreto Mexico.
Every round at TPC Danzante Bay is a wonderful journey at the intersection of Loreto, Mexico’s mountains, desert, and sea, with each hole on the course showcasing the transition from one environment to the next. While not in the Cabo San Lucas golf corridor, golfers are finding and raving about this new course.
For good reason, the cliff-hanging par-three 17th hole attracts the most attention: Golfers eagerly anticipate their attempt to hit the green, perched high above the Sea of Cortez, then breathlessly recount their results in the bar following the round during their Mexico golf vacation. But 17 is not the only hole on the course that contributes to TPC Danzante Bay being considered among the best golf courses in Mexico. We asked architect Rees Jones and his associate Steve Weisser for a few other holes that guests will savor for their beauty and strategic challenge at this Baja California golf resort.
The par-five 2nd hole is the first of the canyon holes. It begins in the central, more desert-like part of the site and plays up along an arroyo—at the base of the mountain range that frames the entire resort—that runs along the entire right side of the hole. The first landing area is wide and relatively level, with tee shot placement important to approach the second landing area because the hole bends to the right and climbs to an elevated green. Playing to the left is preferred, but watch out for the bunker guarding that side. Hitting to the green, the front approach is open with a protecting bunker right; shots hit wide will find the arroyo. Once on the green, the golfer has reached the canyon and can see all the way across the desert to the resort and the bay beyond.
From the second, the course flows in and out of the canyons and back to the desert before making its way through the dunes to the beach.
Number 13 is a mid-length par three facing the Sea of Cortez here in the Islands of Loreto. The green is built on a natural plateau in the dunes surrounded on three sides by native sand and dune vegetation with Danzante Bay behind. The green is large and runs from left-front to right-rear, angling that combined with the changing wind creates continuous variety in the length and type of shot required to leave a makeable birdie putt.
The 13th green ends the golfer’s journey to the beach, with the course turning back toward the mountains and up through the dunes, into the desert, and up the mountain where the famous 17th awaits, followed by the final swoop down the mountain and the culmination of a round at this Baja California golf course that you’ll never forget.
